Living in Cambridge
Cambridge is surrounded by beautiful countryside, with quaint little villages and country houses to explore. Within the city there are open spaces and cattle grazing only 500 yards from the market square. Cambridge manages to merge its role as an historic city with an internationally known university and, in recent times, a reputation as a center of excellence for technology and science.
Cambridge is a place with many parks and green spaces, including Jesus Green, Parker's Piece, Christ's Pieces and Lammas Land. These parks are not just a place to relax and play, but offer tennis courts, an outdoor swimming pool, a paddling pool, a bowling green and a nature reserve.
If you're looking for restaurants serving all kinds of cuisine then Bridge Street has a great selection of chain restaurants such as Garfunkels and Cafe Rouge. But if you are looking for a gentle way to relax then there is no better way to see Cambridge than from a punt. You can hire a punt or take a chauffeured punt trip towards the village of Grantchester.
Cambridge is separated between the main town centre and the Grafton Centre. Most high street clothes and department stores can be found in one of the many shopping areas. Take a walk through King's Parade, Rose Cresent, Trinity Street or Magdalene Street for independent shops selling jewellery, books, gifts and clothes.
Cambridge Market is open daily and sells everything from second-hand books to fresh fruit and vegetables. On Sundays there is a special arts and crafts and Farmers' Market, selling locally produced food.
The city has seen rapid growth since the 1980's and as such the city centre is closed to traffic, so cycling is very much a part of this city - and what a beautiful way to see all of the treasures it has to offer. In fact there are more bicycles here than anywhere else in the UK. There are a number of car parks on the outskirts of the city, many of which offer a Park & Ride service.
Cambridge's railway station was designed to take two full-length trains, it's an example of one of the longest in the country. Although grand, it is a little way away from the city centre. However, Cambridge is well-connected with a number of regional and national routes.
